Diamonds enjoyed their two afternoons at the 2009 Liam Costello Woolton Tournament and gave an excellent account of themselves in both the under 11 and under 12 competitions. The lads were invited by the organisers to take up a spare place in the under 12 section and performed very well on the Saturday in finishing in third place in their group with a record of two wins, two draws and one unlucky defeat against the older opposition. In the under 11 section on the Monday the lads had a fantastic afternoon in winning the competition with a record of nine wins and one draw from their ten games and in the process scoring 29 goals while conceding just two. The win is a well deserved reward for the lads performance both on the day and right throughout the season. A full record of the results and scorers and a brief summary of the afternoon for the under 11 competition is available below.

Diamonds started the competition with a 3-0 win against PSV Manor. It is always important to get off to a good start in these type of competitions and the lads came out of the blocks very quickly against a good side who ultimately finished in third position in the final tournament placings. The second match against Cronus Trojans was the most disappointing performance of the day and the lads had to fight back from a goal down to earn a 1-1 draw. Although not at their best in this one they were probably still the better side but were relieved when Michael Duffy levelled the scores with a long range effort. In the next match Diamonds won 4-0 against a good Paschals side with Fraser Hanlon scoring a hat trick. We were to meet Paschals again at the semi final stage and Paschals finished the tournament in fourth place. Game four was a comfortbale 7-0 win against Cronus Trojans B with Oliver King scoring a hat trick and Liam Cors chipping in with two. The fifth match saw us pitched against local rivals Woolton Vinci A and the lads quickly took a two goal lead but were unable to add to their goal tally. The next match was Diamonds' toughest of the day against Wythenshawe who ended up being knocked out in a penalty shoot out at the quarter final stage. This was a close fought match and Alistair Clark put Diamonds in front but Wythenshawe played some good football and were always a threat on the break. Towards the end Wythenshawe had a couple of dangerous free kicks and threatened to equalise, and nearly did but for a terrific diving save from Cameron McLeod, but Liam Cors put the result beyond doubt when he rifled an unstoppable right foot shot into the top corner for a 2-0 win. In the final group match we faced local rivals again in the shape of Woolton Gold. Diamonds were in control and leading 2-0 and should really have extended their lead but were caught on the break towards the end to make the final scoreline tighter than it should have been. The lads had won six and drawn one of their seven matches to finish top of their group and secure a place in the knockout stage of the tournament.
In the quarter final Diamonds won 3-0 against another local side Woolton Vinci B with the goals coming from Alistair Clark (2) and Joe Harvey. The semi final saw the lads meet Paschals again and Diamonds ran out 3-0 winners with goals from Fraser Hanlon (2) and Kyle Davies. The final against Cronus Titans A looked as though it was going to be one of those unfortunate matches for the Diamonds. They were in control from the start but could not convert any of several clear cut opportunities and the opposition goalkeeper was in fine form to prevent Diamonds taking a deserved lead. Just when it looked as though the match was going to finish in a draw, with the the lottery of a penalty shootout to decide the outcome looming, Diamonds finally managed to break the deadlock. Two late substitutions proved crucial with Fraser Hanlon coming on and scoring the vital first goal and Liam Cors also coming off the bench to get a faint touch with his head on a free kick to help the ball into the back of the net. The late goals were a massive relief for Diamonds players and supporters and also a fairer reflection of Diamonds dominance.
The lads played extremely well throughout the day as evidenced by nine wins and one draw in their ten matches and also by the goal tally of 29-2 in their favour and they thoroughly deserved to win the tournament. Congratulations and well played to all the lads - a fantastic achievement.
Well done to all the teams that took part and hopefully they all enjoyed the tournament and will be back again next year. Thanks to the organisers, committee members and volunteers for all their hard work in making sure the tournament was a success - I am sure that all the teams appreciated your efforts.
